Where Are Those Damn Porno Theatres?

Porno theaters were part and parcel of the fabric of the American experience. Back in the day when dirty movies were made to be shown in a theater, theaters would either run that specific porno on certain nights-or after hours-or there would be specific theaters left to only ever show pornos. And while urban centers could boast more of these porno theaters, suburbia too had its fare share of porno palaces back when audiences would meet to watch dirty movies.

Most times the seedy underbelly of a city would frequent these theaters and even the ones in suburban areas were not held with such regard but there would come times when a porno movie would usurp the usual bad press and raincoat crowd and be celebrated as a movie to see. Then celebrities would throng to those usual porno theaters to take in a celebrated film like Deep Throat or a Behind the Green Door, adding an air of legitimacy to these theaters…at least in the short term.

Alas, most porno theaters have been raised or in the case of the famed 42nd street strip in New York City taken over by theme restaurants, theaters and Disney properties. In very much the same way Las Vegas has been cleaned-up to represent an adult theme park, most of the strips where porno movies used to exist are either now retail spaces of glitzy venues for legitimate movies and theater.

The business of porno has changed so much in so quick a time, due to technology as much as public mores. And though it is true porno theaters have gone the way of the dinosaur, surely porn has not.

These days our P.C,’s and phones are our personal porno theaters. We can have all the dirty movies we want, when we want them. The communal experience of watching any kind of movie-not just porn-is dying in our current culture as we basically grow more sedentary and private in how we interact with the world. But still men and women gravitate to porno and will always do so, even if the theaters are no more.
